618 MUD ON THE EYES

Yochanan (Jn) 9:1-41

SYNOPSIS: There is a very strange but incredible account in the Gospel of Yochanan chapter 9. Yeshua puts mud on the man’s eyes or did He put mud on the man’s eyes? This Shabbat teaching is going to take an in depth Hebraic look at Yochanan chapter 9. We are going to look at physical and spiritual blindness. We are going to look at truth being presented and truth not being received. We are going to look at an unproductive beggar being given eyes to see the truth. We are going to look at how he answers the question when asked what do you see know?

THEME 1: The lesson to come away with from this particular chapter of Yochanan (Jn) 9 is this. It is not enough to have anointed eyes to see. For the blessing does not truly come until you do what the word says, and also yield to that authority. 17 lessons. 1) 1-3 why did this happen 2) 4-5 the work of who sent Him and I am the light that makes things new 3) 6-7 the event that changes the young man’s life. Meeting with Yeshua and listening to the commandment 4) 8-9 blindness leads to begging 5)10-12 the first testimony of the miracle 6)13-14 why do they take him to the leaders. Miracles happen on Shabbat, truth is seen on Shabbat. (So it could produce instead of being a beggar) 7) 15-16 the second testimony. Leaders question Yeshua’s adherence to Shabbat 8) 17 He is a prophet (faith comes by hearing Sh’ma) 9) 18-20 bring the parents to see if he had been blind from birth 10) 21-23 more afraid of man then of Yehovah 11) 24-25 calling Yeshua a sinner under what guidelines are you saying this 12) 26-27 do you want me to testify again 13) 28-29 they say they follow Moshe but don’t know the Law 14) 30-32 doing the will of the Father one should be taught this from birth 15) 33-34 they call him a mamzer but you spoke to his parents. So how can you be a leader if you don’t know truth 16) 35-38 Yeshua introduces Himself to the once blind Jew who now has been shown the light 17) 39-41 the judge has spoken

Yochanan (Jn) 9:1-41 17 lessons about blindness

1) 1-3 why did this happen

Joh 9:1  As Yeshua passed along, he saw a man blind from birth. Joh 9:2  His talmidim asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned — this man or his parents — to cause him to be born blind?" Joh 9:3  Yeshua answered, "His blindness is due neither to his sin nor to that of his parents; it happened so that God's power might be seen at work in him.

Joh 9:2

HOLD PLACE – RDW-  FOUR STEP UNDERSTANDING

STEP ONE

Heb 13:8  Yeshua the Messiah is the same yesterday, today and forever.

STEP TWO

Mat 5:18  Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud ( י ) or a stroke will pass from the Torah — not until everything that must happen has happened.

STEP THREE

Gen 2:16  Adonai, God, gave the person this order: "You may freely eat from every tree in the garden Gen 2:17  except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. You are not to eat from it, because on the day that you eat from it, it will become certain that you will die."

STEP FOUR

Sh’mot (Ex) 20:3-5

Exo 20:3  ב "You are to have no other gods before me. Exo 20:4  You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline. Exo 20:5  You are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, Adonai your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

1) 1-3 why did this happen

Joh 9:1

B’resheet (Gen) 1:3-4

Gen 1:3  Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

Gen 1:4  God saw that the light was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.

Joh 9:1-3

2) 4-5 the work of who sent Him and I am the light that makes things new

Joh 9:4  As long as it is day, we must keep doing the work of the One who sent me; the night is coming, when no one can work.

Joh 9:5  While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

2 STEPS TO BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORK OF THE ONE WHO SENT YESHUA

L-O-F-R

B’resheet 2:2-3 the first three times we see melakah (work)

Gen 2:2  On the seventh day God was finished with his work which he had made, so he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Gen 2:3  God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy; because on that day God rested from all his work which he had created, so that it itself could produce.

Work H4399  מלאכה  melâ'kâh  BDB Definition: occupation, work, business

Gen 2:3

STEP TWO

Sh’mot 31:14-15 The truth can really hurt so there must be agreement

Exo 31:14  Therefore you are to keep my Shabbat, because it is set apart for you. Everyone who treats it as ordinary must be put to death; for whoever does any work on it is to be cut off from his people. Exo 31:15  On six days work will get done; but the seventh day is Shabbat, for complete rest, set apart for Adonai. Whoever does any work on the day of Shabbat must be put to death.

Exo 31:15

Joh 9:4-5

3) 6-7 the event that changes the young man’s life. Meeting with Yeshua and listening to the commandment

Joh 9:6  Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, put the mud on the man's eyes, Joh 9:7  and said to him, "Go, wash off in the Pool of Shiloach!" (The name means "sent.") So he went and washed and came away seeing.

Spit or spittle G4429 πτύω  ptuō  Thayer Definition: to spit

Saliva is a watery substance located in the mouths of animals, secreted by the salivary glands. Human saliva is 99.5% water,

Joh 9:6

Ground G5476  χαμαί  chamai Thayer Definition: on the ground, on the earth

Gen 2:7  Then Adonai, God, formed a man [Hebrew: adam] from the dust of the ground [Hebrew: adamah] and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, so that he became a living being.

Joh 9:6

Now in the CJB it says mud but in the Greek it says  G4081  πηλός  pēlos Thayer Definition: 1) clay, which potters uses 2) mud (wet clay)

Yirmeyahu 18:5-8 The potter tells us to turn from our spiritual blindness

Jer 18:5  Then the word of Adonai came to me: Jer 18:6  "House of Isra'el, can't I deal with you as the potter deals with his clay? — says Adonai. Look! You, house of Isra'el, are the same in my hand as the clay in the potter's hand. Jer 18:7  At one time, I may speak about uprooting, breaking down and destroying a nation or kingdom; Jer 18:8  but if that nation turns from their evil, which prompted me to speak against it, then I relent concerning the disaster I had planned to inflict on it.

Joh 9:6

TWO STEPS

B’resheet 3:4-5 eyes to see good and evil

Gen 3:4  The serpent said to the woman, "It is not true that you will surely die;

Gen 3:5  because God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

STEP TWO

Mattiyahu (Mat) 6:22-23 the eyes are what

Mat 6:22  'The eye is the lamp of the body.' So if you have a 'good eye' your whole body will be full of light; Mat 6:23  but if you have an 'evil eye' your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Joh 9:6

Joh 9:7

B’resheet 18:1-4 wash your feet because you are Elohim, why did Yeshua tell him to wash

Gen 18:1  Yehovah appeared to Avraham by the oaks of Mamre as he sat at the entrance to the tent during the heat of the day. Gen 18:2  He raised his eyes and looked, and there in front of him stood three men. On seeing them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, prostrated himself on the ground, Gen 18:3  and said, "My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, please don't leave your servant.

Gen 18:4  Please let me send for some water, so that you can wash your feet; then rest under the tree,

Gen 18:3

Gen 18:4

Sh’mot (Ex)30:19-20 before ministering

Exo 30:19  Aharon and his sons will wash their hands and feet there

Exo 30:20  when they enter the tent of meeting — they are to wash with water, so that they won't die. Also when they approach the altar to minister by burning an offering for Adonai,

Joh 9:6-7

4) 8-9 blindness leads to begging

Joh 9:8  His neighbors and those who previously had seen him begging said, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?" Joh 9:9  Some said, "Yes, he's the one"; while others said, "No, but he looks like him." However, he himself said, "I'm the one."

Psalm 31:11-12scorned by his neighbors because he was a broken pot

Psa 31:11  I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors; even to acquaintances I am an object of fear - when they see me in the street, they turn away from me. Psa 31:12  Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds; I have become like a broken pot.

Joh 9:8 -9

5)10-12 the first testimony of the miracle but a word is added by the blind man

Joh 9:10  "How were your eyes opened?" they asked him. Joh 9:11  He answered, "The man called Yeshua made mud, put it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Shiloach and wash!' So I went; and as soon as I had washed, I could see." Joh 9:12  They said to him, "Where is he?" and he replied, "I don't know."

Joh 9:11

The anoint is used G2025  ἐπιχρίω  epichriō  Thayer Definition: to spread on, anoint anything upon anything

Joh 9:11-12

6)13-14 why do they take him to the leaders. Miracles happen on Shabbat, truth is seen on Shabbat. (So it could produce instead of being a beggar)

Joh 9:13  They took the man who had been blind to the P'rushim. Joh 9:14  Now the day on which Yeshua had made the mud and opened his eyes was Shabbat.

Gen 2:3  God blessed the seventh day and separated it as holy; because on that day God rested from all his work which he had created, so that it itself could produce.

Joh 9:14

7) 15-16 the second testimony. Leaders question Yeshua’s adherence to Shabbat

Joh 9:15  So the P'rushim asked him again how he had become able to see; and he told them, "He put mud on my eyes, then I washed, and now I can see." Joh 9:16  At this, some of the P'rushim said, "This man is not from God, because he doesn't keep Shabbat." But others said, "How could a man who is a sinner do miracles like these?" And there was a split among them.

He uses G2007  ἐπιτίθημι    ep-ee-tith'-ay-mee Thayer Definition: 1) in the active voice 2) to put or lay upon

Joh 9:16

8) 17 He is a prophet (faith comes by hearing Sh’ma)

Joh 9:17  So once more they spoke to the blind man: "Since you're the one whose eyes he opened, what do you say about him?" He replied: "He is a prophet."

HOLD PLACE

D’varim (Deut) 13:1-5 the bad prophet

Deu 13:3  (13:4) you are not to listen to what that prophet or dreamer says. For Adonai your God is testing you, in order to find out whether you really do love Adonai your God with all your heart and being. Deu 13:4  (13:5) You are to follow Adonai your God, fear him, obey his mitzvot, listen to what he says, serve him and cling to him;

Deu 18:15  "Adonai will raise up for you a prophet like me from among yourselves, from your own kinsmen. You are to pay attention to him,

Joh 9:17

Pro 22:6  Train a child in the way he [should] go; and, even when old, he will not swerve from it.

Joh 9:17

9) 18-20 bring the parents to see if he had been blind from birth

Joh 9:18  The Judeans, however, were unwilling to believe that he had formerly been blind, but now could see, until they had summoned the man's parents. Joh 9:19  They asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?" Joh 9:20  His parents answered, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind;

10) 21-23 more afraid of man then of Yehovah

Joh 9:23  This is why his parents said, "He's old enough, ask him."

HOLD PLACE

B’midbar (Num) 1:2-3 Title of man comes at the age of 20 not 13

Num 1:2  "Take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra'el, by clans and families. Record the names of all the men Num 1:3  twenty years old and over who are subject to military service in Isra'el. You and Aharon are to enumerate them company by company.

Joh 9:21-23

11) 24-25 calling Yeshua a sinner under what guidelines are you saying this

Joh 9:24  So a second time they called the man who had been blind; and they said to him, "Swear to God that you will tell the truth! We know that this man is a sinner." Joh 9:25  He answered, "Whether he's a sinner or not I don't know. One thing I do know: I was blind, now I see."

HOLD PLACE

Sh’mot (Ex) 4:11-12

Exo 4:11  Adonai answered him, "Who gives a person a mouth? Who makes a person dumb or deaf, keen-sighted or blind? Isn't it I, Adonai? Exo 4:12  Now, therefore, go; and I will be with your mouth and will teach you what to say."

Joh 9:25

12) 26-27 do you want me to testify again

Joh 9:26  So they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

Joh 9:27  "I already told you," he answered, "and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Maybe you too want to become his talmidim?"

13) 28-29 they say they follow Moshe but don’t know the Law

Joh 9:28  Then they railed at him. "You may be his talmid," they said, "but we are talmidim of Moshe! Joh 9:29  We know that God has spoken to Moshe, but as for this fellow — we don't know where he's from!"

14) 30-32 doing the will of the Father one should be tought this from birth

Joh 9:30  "What a strange thing," the man answered, "that you don't know where he's from — considering that he opened my eyes! Joh 9:31  We know that God doesn't listen to sinners; but if anyone fears God and does his will, God does listen to him. Joh 9:32  In all history no one has ever heard of someone's opening the eyes of a man born blind.

15) 33-34 they call him a mamzer but you spoke to his parents. So how can you be a leader if you don’t know truth

Joh 9:33  If this man were not from God, he couldn't do a thing!"

Joh 9:34  "Why, you mamzer!" they retorted, "Are you lecturing us?" And they threw him out.

16) 35-38 Yeshua introduces Himself to the once blind Jew who now has been shown the light

Joh 9:35  Yeshua heard that they had thrown the man out. He found him and said, "Do you trust in the Son of Man?" Joh 9:36  "Sir," he answered, "tell me who he is, so that I can trust in him." Joh 9:37  Yeshua said to him, "You have seen him. In fact, he's the one speaking with you now." Joh 9:38  "Lord, I trust!" he said, and he kneeled down in front of him.

G4352  προσκυνέω  proskuneō  pros-koo-neh'-o From G4314 and probably a derivative of G2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his masters hand); to fawn or crouch to, that is, (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.

17) 39-41 the judge has spoken

Joh 9:39  Yeshua said, "It is to judge that I came into this world, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind."

Joh 9:40  Some of the P'rushim nearby heard this and said to him, "So we're blind too, are we?" Joh 9:41  Yeshua answered them, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. But since you still say, 'We see,' your guilt remains.

Joh 9:40-41

Joh 9:11

Are your eyes anointed to see the truth?
